Frequently Asked Questions of Our Staff

1. Are HIV and AIDS are the same thing?
HIV infection and AIDS are two separate things. HIV attacks the immune system---
the body's defense against disease. AIDS is the final stage of HIV infection--when
the body can no long defend itself against mild or even rare diseases.

2. How can HIV can be spread?
HIV is spread through bodily fluids--specifically blood, semen and vaginal fluids
but not saliva. HIV is not spread through the air or casual contact--Just being
around a HIV+ person does not cause infection. Masturbation, alone or with a
partner, is considered "safe". Insect bites can not cause HIV infection (even
mosquito bites). HIV can not be spread by giving blood because blood banks
only use sterile, disposable equipment. However, sharing needles and sex
without a condom are the main ways in which HIV can be spread.

3. If you should become infected with HIV you should.......All of the above.
Test sites have counseling or know where you can get help. A physician
who is knowledgeable and helpful can assist in pointing you to the best
treatments and medications. Ask about new treatments and do your own
research.

4. Sharing needles with friends is a "safe" practice........False.
Sharing needles with anyone is the main way in which HIV can be
spread.

5. Do natural condoms (sheep skin, etc.) protect against HIV/AIDS infection as
well as latex condoms?

The HIV virus is so small that it can pass through the small openings that
are present in lambskin condoms. Latex condoms provide the best protection
against HIV/AIDS infection.

6. If a man "pulls out" prior to coming, can you still be infected with the
HIV/AIDS virus?

Yes--prior to actually coming, most men secrete pre-cum which can contain
the HIV virus. Even though your partner make not cum inside you, you can
still be infected through pre-cum.

7. Is it really important to use water-based lubricant when using a latex condom?

Yes, Oil base products, such as: body lotions, massage oils, petroleum jelly
and vaginal products containing oils, weaken latex condoms and can cause
the condom to break.

8. Can you get AIDS from receiving a massage or being touched by a HIV+ person can result in infection?
Any kind of physical contact such as: hugging, dry kissing, massage, etc.,
is safe as long as there's no contact with body fluids.

9. Can people with HIV feel healthy for many years prior to experiencing any
symptoms of HIV/AIDS?

People may feel healthy for several years after being infected with the HIV
virus. But most will eventually develop AIDS--There is NO cure for HIV/AIDS
at present.

10. Can drugs and alcohol use increase the possibility of getting AIDS/HIV?
Use of drugs and alcohol can lead to risky sexual behavior. Stay sober,
smart and safe. DO NOT mix alcohol, drugs and sex!
